> Autocomplete is the NjectAI feature that suggests the rest of your prompt while you type. The suggestion appears in grey after your text with the hint Press TAB to apply. Tab accepts it and Escape dismisses it. It draws on your active profile and your chat, and a switch in the toolbar menu turns it off.

## How do I use Autocomplete?

Type in the message box of a supported AI tool and pause. After a moment, NjectAI shows a grey suggestion that continues your prompt from where you stopped, with the hint "Press TAB to apply". Press Tab to add the suggestion to your text, press Escape to dismiss it, or keep typing.

:::steps
1. Type at least 10 characters in the message box of ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity or Grok.
2. Pause with the cursor at the end of your text.
3. Read the grey suggestion that appears after your words.
4. Press Tab to accept it, or Escape to dismiss it.
:::

Tab accepts a suggestion only while one is on screen. At any other moment, Tab does what the site normally does. Autocomplete is part of the NjectAI Chrome extension, which shows itself as Nject in your browser.

## When do suggestions appear?

NjectAI asks for a suggestion when your text is 10 to 1,000 characters long and the cursor sits at the end of it. It waits for a short pause: about 0.8 seconds after you stop at a space, or about 1.5 seconds after you stop in the middle of a word. Text that reads as random letters gets no suggestion.

A suggestion only ever continues your text. It never rewrites the words already in the box. When no suggestion comes back, nothing shows, and you carry on typing as usual.

Each account can ask for a set number of suggestions per minute, per hour and per day. Past that limit, no suggestion appears until the limit resets.

## What does Autocomplete use?

Each request carries your text, the site you are on, your active profile and the id of the chat. The NjectAI server reads your profile's interview answers and the AI's last answers in the chat you are in, up to 5, as NjectAI saved them. In a chat with no saved answers yet, it reads your personal memory summary instead. An AI model then writes only the continuation of what you typed.

Autocomplete keeps its context small. Each interview answer goes in cut to 300 characters, and the profile's files and the text read from its links stay out. With **None** as your profile, suggestions draw on the chat and your memory alone. Read how profiles work in [context profiles](https://nject.ai/docs/context-profiles).

## How do I switch Autocomplete off?

Click the Nject icon in your browser's toolbar to open the toolbar menu, then turn off the **Autocomplete** switch. Its line changes from "Suggestions while you type" to "Suggestions are off". Improve your prompt and Context Inject keep working. Turn the switch back on at any time.

To turn off everything NjectAI does in your browser, use the **Nject** switch above it instead. Its line then reads "Extension temporarily disabled", and NjectAI leaves every tab and saves no chats until you turn it back on. Install help is in [install and sign in](https://nject.ai/docs/install).

## Where does Autocomplete work?

Autocomplete works in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok and Grok on X. Google AI Mode has no Autocomplete: there, NjectAI offers Improve your prompt and Context Inject. The table shows each feature by AI tool.

| AI tool | Autocomplete | Improve your prompt | Context Inject |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| ChatGPT | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Claude | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Gemini | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Google AI Mode | No | Yes | Yes |
| Perplexity | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Grok | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Grok on X | Yes | Yes | Yes |

## Why is the Autocomplete switch locked?

The switch is locked when your account does not have Nject Pro, the NjectAI plan. It turns grey, its line reads "Available with Nject Pro", and an **Upgrade to Pro** button appears below it. Without the plan, NjectAI asks for no suggestions at all, so nothing appears as you type. With an active plan, the switch works as usual. See [plans and billing](https://nject.ai/docs/plans-and-billing).
